Julian’s written in to ask…

We often say that we want a creative solution to a particular business problem, but we never train creativity. Why is this? Is creativity innate or can it be taught?

You can’t talk abut this topic without mentioning Hugh MacLeod’s excellent PDF download ‘How to be Creative’ which most regular bloggers will know, but which hasn’t spread much off-line. He assumes that everyone is creative in his readership, but that people just need help in bringing it out and making it work. In conclusion – a creative project may or may not work, it is creative and new. Not many businesses are up for that. But those that are can take the pain usually find a benefit in the end. eg. the ‘Easy’ brand – hit and miss but generally seems to make money.
